Ducati 1098 recall

1098.gifDucati’s 1098 is being recalled over two separate problems, the firm said today, Monday, May 14, 2007.

A statement issued by the firm said: “There are currently two safety recalls for the 1098 which are being dealt with under usual Department of Transport guidelines. The first recall concerns the cam belt pulley tensioners which were found to not be within specified tolerances during the early production of the bike. The second recall is for the fuel pipe clips which are checked for proper installation. In both cases the number of bikes affected is very small.”

The firm has so far failed to confirm exactly how many bikes are affected or the precise symptoms of either problem. Spokesman Alan Jones said: “As far as we are aware, none of the fuel pipes checked so far has needed altering and we have not been made aware of any failures directly attributed to these recalls. It is not uncommon for there to be early issues with new models from all manufacturers and we are satisfied that any quality issues have been quickly addressed.”

He said owners would have been notified by letter. MCN will be constantly updating this story as more details become available.

Ducati set to launch new Monster

Ducati insiders have revealed that the firm will launch a new generation of Monster at the Milan show this November.

The bike, shown here as a computer-generated image, will feature evolutionary styling, but is the first completely new Monster since the bike was launched in 1992.
Powered by the air-cooled 1100cc engine from the Hypermotard, plus the 675cc motor of the smallest current Monster, it hopes to take the old bike’s place as the firm’s best-selling machine.

monster-v2.jpgThe styling is said to be instantly recognisable as a Monster, but with a more modern overall appearance. Twin high-mounted exhausts, one either side of the seat, and a sloping headlight similar to that on the Aprilia Shiver are said to be the main styling cues of the bike.

Ducati is concentrating on air-cooled versions of the Monster, so the current Testastretta-engined S4R is likely to be dropped, and eventually replaced by a sportier machine based on a stripped-naked version of the 1098.

It’s official - Triumph Street Triple Revealed

streettripleoff.jpgThe worst-kept secret in motorcycling has finally been made official – Triumph is to offer a naked version of the Daytona 675 later this year.

Forget computer-generated images you may have seen in other magazines, this is the first official photograph of the firm’s new Street Triple 675.

Looking exactly like the bike revealed in MCN’s spyshots last week, the official picture shows the Street Triple is more than just a naked Daytona, with extensive modifications including new forks, brakes and a completely restyled rear end. This provides better pillion comfort and gives a family resemblance to the bigger Speed Triple.

Triumph has yet to reveal detailed specifications, but the engine is understood to be retuned for more torque and slightly less power than the Daytona, with a peak output of around 108bhp. The massive rear sprocket hints at the reworked gearing, which insiders say turns the Street Triple into a hooligan’s dream of a wheelie machine.

The firm has revealed that in Europe, the bike will cost less than 8000 Euros (£5450), but won’t reveal the rest of the specs until it makes its world debut at the Tridays festival in Neukirchen, Germany, on June 30.

London’s bike boom continues

The number of cyclists on the capital’s major roads increased by a further six per cent between March 2006 and March 2007. The number of cyclists in London has soared by 83 per cent since 2000. PLUS: a new telly ad campaign starts soon

The new figures revealed today, came as Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, launched a new TV advertising campaign, ‘You’re better off by bike’, to encourage even more Londoners to take to their bikes this summer.

here are now an estimated 480,000 cycle journeys every day across London, around 30,000 more than a year ago.

The Mayor of London and Transport for London have increased investment in cycling by 50 per cent this year from £24 million in 2006/07 to £36 million in 2007/08. In 2000 investment in cycling stood at just £5.5 million.

500kms of the London Cycle Network Plus - a network of signed routes for cyclists across the capital - has already been completed and the full 900km network will be completed by the end of 2010. Transport for London has installed 10,000 cycling parking spaces across the capital in the past two years.

While cycling numbers have risen by 83 per cent, the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured on London’s roads has fallen by 28 per cent.

Livingstone said:

“London is experiencing a cycling renaissance. We can now justifiably call ourselves a cycling city, a proposal that would have seemed ridiculous just six years ago. Record investment in cycling through Transport for London, an expanding network of cycle and bus lanes, and the confidence given to cyclists through tackling congestion in central London, has transformed levels of cycling in the capital.

“2007 is another massive year for cycling with the Tour de France arriving in the capital for the first time in July. I hope Le Tour will inspire even more cycling and a new generation of people to take to two wheels.”*

Jenny Jones, the Mayor’s green transport adviser, said: “This is the year of the bike in London. Cyclists are going to transform the look and feel of our city. More cyclists means less congested roads and public transport. Investing in cycling means less pollution and noise, but faster and cheaper transport. More cycling means a healthier, more pleasant London for everyone.”

London’s new bike-themed TV advertising campaign will be broadcast on commercial TV stations within London for a month, starting on on May 4th. A poster and newspaper advertising campaign began in April and will continue throughout the summer.
